With less foreign tourists visiting Siem Reap in the first half of 2009, innovation is the name of the game for new contenders in the town’s hotel trade. Suites and Sweet, which opened in July, has introduced the intriguing concept of a traditional floating village by situating 18 suites around a snaking man-made lake. General manager Jan Willem van Der Kolk said: “We wanted to create a kind of luxury accommodation in Siem Reap that didn’t exist in the current hotel market. Of course a financial crisis is not the ideal time to open a hotel but since opening, the economy seems to have picked up. As we offer something unique we are optimistic for the coming season.” He added how enjoyable it had been working on a challenging project with “the friendliest and most passionate staff I’ve met”.
All 18 suites have a lake view and come with a private pool and terrace. Prices start from $180 a night for a deluxe pool suite. Special September package deals include a triple room for $180. For more info: www.suitesandsweet.com
